Specific heat of calcium

As seen here, you wouldn't be able to determine the identity of a calcium unknown thru specific heat in the same manner done for less reactive metals. My CHE 113/111 students need to recognize this...

Chemical Flame Tests

Recall that each element has a characteristic atomic emission spectrum, this is a nice graphic related to this concept!

For my students, it PAY$ to be concerned about getting the structure correct!

To all my current and former students, especially those entering Orgo 1 this fall...pay close attention to get the structure right...I'm certain the folks at PSU are wishing they had!

I find this to be deliciously fun!

From the Just Like Cooking blog (http://justlikecooking.blogspot.com/2014/04/science-blackout-poetry.html)...

I'm reasonably certain that is the Carbonic anhydrase (enzyme) ribbon structure above CO2, obviously it is NOT carbon dioxide!

Isoniazid, a tuberculosis drug

Below is the structure of Isoniazid, or Isonicotinic acid hydrazide. It finds use in treatments for tuberculosis. This compound, which incorporates a carbonyl functionality as part of the hydrazide (similar in structure to a secondary amide) and the nitrogenous heterocycle pyridine.

More info on Isoniazid can be found at these links:

Chemical Equilibrium and the Haber process for Ammonia synthesis

This link provides a nice connection of equilibrium and Le Chatelier's principle and the Haber process, mentioned in my CHE 112 class today!

Those curious should read about Haber in the book "From Stars to Stalagmites" by Paul Braterman, link to Amazon site here: http://www.amazon.com/From-Stars-To-Stalagmites-Everything/dp/9814324973
